Saudi Arabia – Accession to the Hauge’s Apostille Convention

On 7 December 2022, Saudi Arabia became the 122nd member to accede to the Convention Abolishing the Requirements of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, commonly referred to as the “Apostille Convention”.

The accession allows documents originating in Saudi Arabia, including education certificates and birth certificates, as well as documents which have been legalised according to the requirements of the treaty, to be accepted in the 121 member countries. It also allows documents originating from other Hague member countries (including Australia) such as powers of attorney to be accepted in Saudi Arabia with an Apostille Certificate issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) thereby removing the requirement for legalisation up to the Saudi Consulate.
